On Christmas Eve, Pope Francis Calls on Christians to Rejoice

Pope Francis has urged the world's 1.2 billion Catholics to rejoice this Christmas because "Jesus is the light who brightens the darkness" and brings peace.
The pontiff delivered his first Christmas Eve homily as pope during a Mass at St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican on Tuesday.
His homily focused on humans' historical and personal journey for a promised land and salvation - and in the pope's words - "the spirit of people who walk to see a great light."
Francis, known for his humility and service to the poor, said every person has "both bright and dark moments, lights and shadows." He urged the faithful to journey forward with an open heart and cast aside pride, deceit and self-seeking ways.
He said God revealed grace, mercy and love through Jesus, who guides the world. The pontiff closed by saying, "Jesus is the light who brightens the darkness. He is our peace."
The Argentine-born Francis was elected pope in March, a month after the surprise resignation of Emeritus Pope Benedict.
Since then, the 78-year-old Francis' popularity has soared and he has been praised for helping to reshape the image of the church.
In December, Time magazine named him "Person of the Year," and lauded his call for the healing of the masses who face disease, poverty and personal turmoil in their lives.

South Sudan President Calls for End to Ethnic Violence

The president of South Sudan, Salva Kiir, has expressed concern about recent strife in his country, condemning those "who would like to take power by force of arms."
Deploring the killings of innocent people, he criticized those "who are targeting others because of their tribal affiliation."
In a written statement, the South Sudanese leader said he has ordered the country's security forces "not to harrass civilians in any way... threaten or abuse them."
"Those unruly and undisciplined soldiers who are behind such terrible acts" he called criminals who "will not escape the long arm of justice."
Kiir called on everyone involved to "put the interest of our newly independent nation first." Mentioning his former vice president and nemesis, Riek Machar, by name, he urged him and forces supporting him to do the same.
Meanwhile in New York, the United Nations Security Council has voted to increase the size of its peacekeeping force in South Sudan, where violence between government forces and breakaway factions has escalated over the past week, endangering hundreds of thousands of civilians, and bringing the new nation to the brink of civil war.

In a statement following the Security Council vote, U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon thanked leaders across Africa and around the world for their determination to respond to the violence in South Sudan. "The world is watching and the world is acting," he said.

The Security Council resolution authorizes the U.N. to send an additional 5,500 peacekeeping troops to the strife-torn nation, boosting the number of peacekeepers there to 12,500.   

Still, Ban warned that the situation remains tense.  Two U.N. peacekeepers and hundreds of civilians have been killed over the past week.

Ban expressed concern that the violence may be spreading. 

"We have reports of horrific attacks, including extrajudicial killings, rape and mass graves. Tens of thousands have fled their homes and the numbers keep growing and, of course, innocent civilians are being targeted because of their ethnicity," said Ban.

The fighting that followed an alleged coup attempt last week has displaced more than 80,000 people amid reports of violence between members of the Dinka and Nuer ethnic groups.  President Salva Kiir, a Dinka, blames former vice president Riek Machar, a Nuer, of masterminding the alleged coup attempt.

Ban warned that those responsible for human rights violations and crimes against humanity will be held accountable, but he added that the political players within South Sudan bear ultimate responsibility for ending the conflict.

"In this season of peace, I urge the leaders of South Sudan to act for peace, stop the violence, start the dialogue [and] save your proud and newly independent country," said Ban.

The immediate prospects for dialogue between the warring parties seem remote.  Meanwhile, U.S. President Barack Obama has moved 150 Marines to Djibouti to facilitate the evacuation of Americans in South Sudan. He has indicated that, if necessary, the United States might take "further action.

رپورٹ میں پاکستانی وزارت خزانہ کے حکام کی طرف سے فراہم کردہ دستاویزات کا حوالہ دیتے ہوئے بتایا گیا کہ چین کے ادارے چائنا نیشنل نیوکلیئر کو آپریشن نے پاکستان کو سب سے بڑے جوہری پلانٹ کی تعمیر کیلئے 6 ارب 50 کروڑ ڈالر کا قرضہ دینے کا وعدہ کیا ہے اس پاور پلانٹ میں دو ری ایکٹرز ہوں گے جن کے ذریعے 11,11 سو میگا واٹ بجلی پیدا کی جا سکے گی۔ پاکستان جوہری توانائی کمیشن کے چیئرمین انصار پرویز نے کہا کہ چین کو مکمل اعتماد ہے کہ پاکستان جوہری پلانٹ چلانے کی صلاحیت رکھتا ہے۔ انھوں نے کہا کہ کراچی میں تعمیر ہونے والا جوہری پاور پلانٹ2019ء میں مکمل ہو گا۔

US Positions Troops to Enter South Sudan

NAIROBI — The United States has sent 150 Marines to a military base in Djibouti to respond as needed to the crisis in South Sudan.  Repositioning of soldiers comes after four U.S. soldiers were wounded during an evacuation operation in Jonglei state.

The U.S. military’s Africa command, known as AFRICOM, said Tuesday that soldiers have arrived at Camp Lemonnier in Djibouti from an airbase in Spain.

AFRICOM said this is the first time the Marine Air-Ground Task Force has deployed to Africa in support of an operational mission.

A spokesman for AFRICOM, Benjamin Benson, said the movement is based on the “possibility of threats against U.S. personnel and facilities” in South Sudan.  “By positioning these forces forward we’re able to more quickly able to respond to a crisis in the region, if required,” he said.

On Tuesday, the U.N. human rights office said a mass grave has been discovered in the town of Bentiu, capital of Unity State.  Spokeswoman Ravina Shamdasani tells VOA that a U.N. official saw 14 bodies in a grave and 20 at a nearby riverside.

Shamdasani indicated the bodies could be those of some 75 Dinka army soldiers unaccounted for and feared dead.

The U.N. Security Council is due to vote Tuesday on a resolution to send 5,500 additional peacekeepers to South Sudan.

The country has been wracked by violence as a political rift between the president and his former vice president has divided the military against itself in some parts of the country.  Witnesses also report a rise in inter-ethnic killings.

The U.S. sent 45 soldiers to South Sudan last week to protect civilians and to guard its embassy as U.S. citizens were airlifted from the country.

On Saturday, four U.S. soldiers were wounded when unknown gunmen shot at their helicopters during an evacuation mission in Jonglei state.

Benson said the military has adjusted its strategy in response to threats abroad following the attack on the U.S. consulate in Benghazi, Libya last year that left four people dead, including a U.S. ambassador.

“One of the lessons learned from the tragic events of the Benghazi attacks in 2012 was that we needed to be better postured in order to respond to developing crisis situations if needed and so cautionary movements like this will allow us to do that.”

South Sudanese President Salva Kiir and former vice president Riek Machar have conditionally agreed to talks to resolve the current crisis.

Kiir has accused Machar of being behind an attempted coup that started the violence last week.  Machar denies the charges but has stated his own presidential ambitions and has called on the armed forces to remove Mr. Kiir from power.

Soldiers who have defected from the military have taken control of the capitals of Jonglei and Unity States.  The government has vowed to send troops to reclaim the territories.

The United Nations said more than 80,000 people have been displaced by the violence which has left hundreds dead in the past week.

Kalashnikov Assault Rifle Designer Dies

MOSCOW — Mikhail Kalashnikov, the designer of the assault rifle that has killed more people than any other firearm in the world, died on Monday aged 94, Russian officials said.

Kalashnikov, who was in his 20s when he created the AK-47 just after World War II, died in his home city of Izhevsk near the Ural Mountains, where his gun is still made, a spokesman for the Udmurtia province's president said on state television.

The spokesman did not give the cause of death. Kalashnikov was fitted with a electric heartbeat stimulator at a Moscow hospital in June and had been in hospital in Izhevsk since Nov. 17, state media reported.

The AK-47, which rarely jams even in adverse conditions, went into service in the Soviet armed forces in 1949. Today, Kalashnikov rifles are still a mainstay of Russia's armed forces and police.

Known as the weapon of choice for guerrillas, the gun and its imitations have been used in conflicts around the world for decades.

At a lavish Kremlin ceremony on Kalashnikov's 90th birthday, then-President Dmitry Medvedev bestowed on him the highest state honor - the Hero of Russia gold star medal - and lauded him for creating “the national brand every Russian is proud of."

Kalashnikov, a son of Siberian peasants who never finished school, said pride in his iconic invention was mixed with the pain of seeing it used by criminals and child soldiers.

UN to Vote on Bolstering South Sudan Peacekeeping Force

The United States says all members of the U.N. Security Council support a proposal to send 5,500 peacekeepers to South Sudan in order to protect civilians from worsening violence.
The Security Council is due to vote Tuesday afternoon on a resolution to transfer troops from other U.N. missions in Africa following the proposal from U.N. chief Ban Ki-moon.
U.S. Ambassador to the U.N. Samantha Power said late Monday that South Sudan is "in jeopardy" and that its leaders can either choose to engage in dialogue or tear the nation apart.South Sudan President Salva Kiir said Monday in a meeting with U.S. special envoy for South Sudan Donald Booth that he is willing to hold talks with his former vice president Riek Machar without preconditions.
South Sudan Foreign Minister Barnaba Marial Benjamin told VOA that Kiir stressed in remarks to parliament that he will never again take South Sudan to war and that talks are the way to end the violence.
"President Salva Kiir, being an elected president democratically, is responsible for the lives of the people of South Sudan, including the foreigners in this country, so it is his absolute constitutional right and mandate to see that peace is achieved. And I hope Dr. Riek Machar should also be able to see the same, that the people of this country suffered so much and cannot be losing their lives because of a power struggle," said Benjamin.
Kiir, an ethnic Dinka, blames Machar, an ethic Nuer, for what he says was an attempted military coup that triggered the violence on December 16. Hundreds of people have died in the fighting.
Machar told Reuters on Monday that he will take part in dialogue immediately if Kiir releases detained opposition leaders.
The United Nations says the violence has forced 100,000 people from their homes, and that 45,000 people have sought shelter at U.N. bases in South Sudan.
Journalist Hannah McNeish, who is in the capital, Juba, told VOA the fighting has a clear ethnic element, with members of the Nuer and Dinka ethnic groups targeting each other.
"There are people going house to house, tracking people down in term of ethnicity. They are taking them out of their houses, they are binding their hands, and executing them if they are not the right ethnicity. This is completely out of control," said McNeish.

کراچی میں چہلم کے جلوسوں کے راستوں پر دھماکے

پاکستان کے سب سے بڑے شہر کراچی میں ماتمی جلوسوں کے راستوں پر ہونے والے تین دھماکوں میں کم از کم ایک شخص ہلاک اور متعدد افراد زخمی ہوگئے ہیں۔کراچی میں یہ دھماکے ایسے وقت ہوئے ہیں جب شہر میں شہدائے کربلا کے چہلم کے موقع پر سکیورٹی کے انتہائی سخت انتظامات کیے گئے ہیں۔پہلا دھماکہ کیپری سنیما کے قریب ایم اے جناح روڈ پر مرکزی جلوس کے راستے میں ہوا تاہم اس وقت تک جلوس اس جگہ نہیں پہنچا تھا اس لیے کوئی جانی نقصان نہیں ہوا۔

مقامی ذرائع ابلاغ کے مطابق پولیس کا کہنا ہے کہ دھماکہ خیز مواد سڑک کنارے اشتہاری بورڈ کے کھمبے میں نصب تھا۔

جائے وقوعہ پر موجود کراچی پولیس کے ایڈیشنل انسپکٹر جنرل شاہد حیات نے صحافیوں کو بتایا ہے کہ دھماکہ خیز مواد کی مقدار کم تھی اور ایم اے جناح روڈ کی دوبارہ چیکنگ کی جا رہی ہے۔

اس دھماکے کے کچھ دیر بعد اورنگی ٹاؤن دس نمبر کے علاقے میں امام بارگاہ کے باہر دو دھماکے ہوئے۔

مومن آباد پولیس سٹیشن کے ایک اہلکار نے بی بی سی اردو کے حسن کاظمی کو بتایا کہ ایک دھماکہ فٹ پاتھ پر جبکہ دوسرا موٹرسائیکلوں کی دکان میں ہوا۔

ان کا کہنا تھا کہ دھماکے سے ایک شخص موقع پر ہی ہلاک ہوگیا جبکہ دس زخمیوں کو ہسپتال منتقل کیا گیا ہے۔

فوج اور رینجرز کے دستے حساس شہروں میں گشت کر رہے ہیں

ٹی وی فوٹیج میں دیکھا جا سکتا ہے کہ اس دھماکے کی جگہ پر موجود ایک ایمبولینس کو بھی شدید نقصان پہنچا۔

پاکستان کے سرکاری ٹی وی کے مطابق کراچی میں چہلمِ امام حسین کے موقع پر جلوسوں کے راستے کنٹینر لگا کر بند کیے گئے ہیں اور صوبائی محکمۂ داخلہ نے پورے صوبے میں ڈبل سواری پر پابندی لگا دی ہے۔

کراچی سمیت صوبے کے کئی شہروں میں موبائل سروس بھی معطل ہے جبکہ حساس اضلاع میں فوج بھی تعینات ہے۔
