U.S. President Barack Obama has given his wife Michelle a birthday
present that many mothers can only dream of - time alone without the
demands of children.
Her gift is to remain in Hawaii, where the Obama family spent a two-week vacation, to spend time with her friends ahead of her 50th birthday later this month.
President Obama and his two daughters, Sasha and Malia, left the warm breezes of the island of Oahu and boarded Air Force One late Saturday for the trip back to the icy winds of Washington.
It was not immediately clear when the first lady will return to the White House.
The president is expected to ratchet up his administration's push for an extension of emergency unemployment benefits upon his return to Washington.

Thousands of African Migrants Protest Israel Detention Policy

many holding banners demanding freedom for compatriots jailed as
illegal job-seekers by Israel, protested on Sunday in a main Tel Aviv
square against a new open-ended detention law.
Human rights groups say more than 300 people have been arrested since the law, which allows authorities to detain migrants without valid visas indefinitely, was passed by Israel's parliament three weeks ago.
Some 60,000 migrants, largely from Eritrea and Sudan, have crossed into Israel across a once-porous border with Egypt since 2006, Israeli authorities say.
Many live in poor areas of Tel Aviv and say they want asylum and safe haven. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said he views the presence of many of the Africans as a threat to Israel's Jewish social fabric and his government.
An Israeli border fence has since cut off the influx from Egypt, but migrants who have already crossed can be sent to what the government describes as an open prison in Israel's southern desert.
The facility is similar to a half-way house, in which detainees can leave during the day but must report back by nightfall. Migrants can be held there without a time limit pending voluntary repatriation, implementation of deportation orders or resolution of their asylum requests.
Organizers handed out leaflets demanding that Israel “release all refugees from prison and stop this detention policy”. Rights groups have appealed the new law.

A new wave of bombings has killed at least 19 people in Baghdad as Iraqi
security forces prepared for a major operation to retake two western
cities held by al-Qaida-linked militants.

Lt. Gen. Rasheed Fleih, who leads the Anbar Military Command, said it will take a few days to completely retake the two cities and that pro-government Sunni tribes are leading the fight.
"And after the tribes end their operations, the troops will start a wide-scale military operation, after a request from the provincial council and the governor, who have appealed to us to support the tribes and the security troops, to get fighters from the al-Qaida-linked Islamic State in Iraq and Levant out of Anbar province," he said.
U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said Sunday that the United States would provide assistance to Iraqi forces in their battle against the militants but that it was "their fight."
Kerry said Washington was "very, very concerned" about the resurgence of ISIL but that it was not contemplating any return of U.S. ground troops, after their withdrawal in December 2011.
Residents say it has been quiet since late Saturday in Fallujah, where militants still control the center of the city.
Al-Qaida militants largely took both cities over last week and have been fending off incursions by government forces there since.

Al-Qaida Raises Flag, Claims Control Over Iraqi City of Fallujah

A local journalist who asked for anonymity out of fear of retribution told The Washington Post that police and other government-aligned forces had abandoned the city and that al-Qaida had burned all Iraqi national flags.
Fighting across the vast open spaces of western Iraq has become a severe test of Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki's ability to hold the country together and prevent full-scale civil war.
Meanwhile, in the al-Anbar provincial capital, Ramadi, a tribal leader who fought alongside U.S. troops in 2007 told The Washington Post his fighters had joined police in ejecting al-Qaida loyalists. He said the regional ISIS leader, Abdul Rahman al-Baghdadi, was among those killed in the fighting.
The explosion of violence in western Iraq is pitting al-Qaida-linked Sunni extremists, who now control large swaths of the region west of Baghdad, against forces of the Shi'ite-dominated central government. Government forces in the west are backed by local tribesmen who have chosen to align themselves with Baghdad rather than with ISIS fighters.
Al-Anbar province was the center of the Sunni insurgency during the eight-year presence of U.S. military forces, which withdrew from the country in December 2011. More than 1,300 U.S. military personnel were killed in the region.

Kerry Holds Talks With Palestinian Leader

Kerry is continuing talks with Israeli and Palestinian Authority leaders
in hopes they can soon agree on a framework peace deal.
Kerry met Friday with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas in the West Bank city of Ramallah. Several hundred protesters marched through the streets there ahead of the U.S. diplomat's visit to denounce the peace talks as a delay tactic.
He first held talks with Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Liberman seeking to broaden support for the peace talks among right-wing members of the Israeli government.
Liberman said in a statement that any agreement between Israel and the Palestinians must be based on the strong foundations of security for Israel and a stable economy for the Palestinians. He stressed the importance of continued dialogue between the two parties.
Liberman previously has been critical of the U.S. diplomatic efforts but recently has moderated his comments.
Kerry began his trip on Thursday by saying he hoped to narrow differences over a framework to provide guidelines for permanent status negotiations.
"It would address all of the core issues. It would create the fixed defined parameters by which the parties would then know where they are going and what the end result can be," he said.
"It would address all of the core issues that we have been addressing since day one, including borders, security, refugees, Jerusalem, mutual recognition and the end of conflict and of all claims," Kerry added.
Israeli doubts
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu responded on Thursday by saying there are growing doubts that the Palestinian leadership sincerely wants peace. He accused it of inciting violence among its people.
Palestinian leaders have accused the Israeli government of sabotaging the peace talks by continuing to expand Jewish settlements in the West Bank and East Jerusalem. They criticize the Israeli government for failing to thwart attacks by Jewish settlers against Palestinians.
Some Palestinians have protested Kerry's visit saying the U.S. government favors Israel in the peace talks.
An analyst with Tel Aviv's Institute for National Security Studies, Ephraim Kan, said there is a lack of trust on both sides.
"I'm not very optimistic about making any real progress in the negotiations with the Palestinians because both parties are not enthusiastic about it," he said. "Both parties are pessimistic about these negotiations. The Americans are putting pressure on both parties but it's not enough."
More meetings are scheduled for Saturday and Sunday. And Kerry's office has announced that he plans to return in a few weeks to continue the discussions.

'The Fast and the Furious' star has admitted he is struggling to cope with the 'painful void' since his 'brother' died alongside his friend, Roger Rodas, when their car crashed and burst into flames in Santa Clarita, California on November 30.
The 46-year-old actor posted a picture of himself laughing with his late co-star while on a press tour for their latest film from the franchise on Facebook on Thursday (02.01.14), with the caption: 'There was always moments of child-like laughter... We had accomplished so much by 2013... P.s. The complexities of Brotherhood, and the painful void... of it's absence.'
Vin revealed late last month that 'Fast Furious 7,' which he began filming alongside Paul in September, will be released on April 10, 2015, even though they were on a break from shooting when the star passed away.

'The Fast and the Furious' star has admitted he is struggling to cope with the 'painful void' since his 'brother' died alongside his friend, Roger Rodas, when their car crashed and burst into flames in Santa Clarita, California on November 30.
The 46-year-old actor posted a picture of himself laughing with his late co-star while on a press tour for their latest film from the franchise on Facebook on Thursday (02.01.14), with the caption: 'There was always moments of child-like laughter... We had accomplished so much by 2013... P.s. The complexities of Brotherhood, and the painful void... of it's absence.'
Vin revealed late last month that 'Fast Furious 7,' which he began filming alongside Paul in September, will be released on April 10, 2015, even though they were on a break from shooting when the star passed away.
He posted a photo of them on Facebook on December 22 with the caption: 'The last scene we filmed together...There was a unique sense of completion, of pride we shared... in the film we were now completing... the magic captured... and, in just how far we've come... 'Fast and Furious 7' will be released...April 10th 2015! P.s. He'd want you to know first.'

China says police kill eight 'terrorists' in Xinjiang
It was the latest in a series of attacks pointing to growing unrest in the large sprawling region of Xinjiang, home to a simmering rebellion against Chinese rule among parts of the native Muslim Uighur population who want more autonomy from Beijing.
Recent clashes, including an attack on a police station last month, have left dozens of people dead.
A Xinjiang government press officer confirmed Monday's report but said he had no further information.
He gave only his surname, Cao. Police reached by phone in Shache and Kashgar said they had no information about the incident.
The Chinese government typically calls such incidents terrorist attacks linked to radicals based overseas, although there is little evidence that they are carefully organized.
Xinjiang is home to about 9 million Uighurs, who make up less than half of the population of Xinjiang, which they used to dominate.
Many complain that they have been marginalized by policies favoring migrants from China's ethnic Han majority.
Beijing says it treats all minorities fairly and spends billions of dollars on development and improving living standards in Xinjiang.
Tianshan Net said the police took ''resolute measures'' by shooting the eight and arresting one, adding the case was under further investigation.
Sweden-based Uighur activist Dilxat Raxit said Uighurs were being shot to death ''due to their discontent with China's policies.''
''To label the protesters as terrorists and shoot them to death is a new way of suppressing the Uighurs following China's judicial reforms,'' he said, referring to recent moves to improve the country's party-controlled justice system.
As well as a number of deadly clashes in Xinjiang this year, an attack in October struck at the heart of Beijing.
Three Uighurs drove a vehicle through crowds in front of iconic Tiananmen Gate, killing themselves and two tourists.

An investigative committee spokesman said a woman set off Sunday's bomb in front of metal detectors at the train station's entrance. Dozens of people were wounded in that attack.
Authorities found what they claim is the bomber's severed head, and identified her as coming from Dagestan, a republic in the nearby volatile North Caucasus.

ہزار آٹھ کی ایک رپورٹ میں کہا گیا تھا کہ ایک طاقتور شمسی طوفان، کرۂ ارض
کے مواصلاتی نظام کو دو کھرب ڈالر کا نقصان پہنچا سکتا ہے۔ اِس کے علاوہ
دنیا بھر میں انتشار پھیلانے کا سبب بن سکتا ہے۔
برطانیہ کے محکمۂ موسمیات کے مطابق، آئندہ چند ماہ
میں، خلائی موسم کی پیشگوئی کا آغاز کر دیا جائے گا۔ ایک ایسے وقت میں، جب
سورج کی حدت، گیارہویں سال کے عروج پر ہے اور خدشات ہیں کہ یہ حدت، نئے
سال میں کسی بھی وقت، شمسی طوفان پیدا کر سکتی ہے۔
